Recently, my nephew came to visit us. He actually came from Australia to begin his new career there in the healthcare industry. I was delighted to receive some 'pasalubong' from him. Among the goodies he gave, what excited me most was vegemite. Vegemite is a food product that is a staple foe Australians. I've watched people in Youtube try it and most of their reactions were not positive. And this really intrigued me. Since I'm quite adventurous when it comes to food, I knew I had to try this. Thanks to my nephew, my opportunity finally came.
Vegemite is basically made from barley and wheat. It contains lots of B vitamins. Although, it's rich in gluten as well which isn't too inviting for those on a diet. Usually, vegemite is used as a spread on breads, biscuits, etc.
My newphew told me that it is commonly spread together with butter. I tried a bite of the sandwich he made and it did taste good. However, I wanted to try it as it is. The smell is not that pleasant; if it's your first time, it's already going to send signals to your brain to stay away from it. But in my case, I'd like to push myself to a greater appreciation of international culinary experience. I took a little portion and had a taste. The taste is on the salty and bitter side with hints of fermented ingredients (perhaps this is what causes it to have a funny smell). The next thing I did was spread it in bread; I took a bite and yes, I got to appreciate it better. It wasn't really that bad as how Youtubers reacted.
Overall, appreciating and enjoying vegemite is an acquired taste. As long as you're open to new taste preferences, it'll be easy for you to take it into your list of food options. I hope you'll get your chance to taste it soon.
